Sustainable Weight Loss After 50
The mathematics of fat loss are straightforward: about 3,500 calories equals one pound (7,700 per kilogram). A consistent 500-calorie daily deficit yields roughly one pound (0.5 kg) of fat loss per week under stable conditions.
For men over 50 the priority is preserving muscle. That means keeping protein high (1.8–2.4 g/kg) and continuing resistance training throughout. Losing weight through diet alone, without lifting, sheds a disproportionate share of muscle â slowing metabolism and making the weight harder to keep off.
For women over 50 the same principles apply, with a few added considerations. The hormonal changes of menopause slow metabolism and tend to shift fat toward the middle, which can make the scale move more slowly â this is normal and not a reason to cut calories drastically. Keeping protein high, prioritizing strength training to protect muscle and bone, and aiming for a gradual, sustainable deficit remain the most effective and health-preserving approach.
